Spoilers for today's Connections puzzle

We're about to reveal some of the answers. Please scroll slowly if you don't want the entire puzzle spoiled. (The complete solution is just below.)

Warnings for today's obscure parts

A background in classic TV comedies (with one modern counterpart) is required for today's purple category.

There's no air travel category today, even with words like NONSTOP, FLIGHT, and COACH.

Unfortunately, there's no poker category today, despite the use of words like STRAIGHT, FULL HOUSE, and FLUSH.

Puzzle categories for today

  • Yellow: EMBARRASMENT INDICATORS
  • Green: UNInterrupted
  • Blue: Diverse PALETTE
  • Purple: SITCOM SIGNATURES

One more warning: THE SOLUTION IS BELOW

Eager to discover the answers for today's Connections puzzle? I reveal them all below.

What are the yellow words in today's Connections?

The yellow grouping is often the most straightforward. Today, the yellow category theme is EMBARRASMENT INDICATORS, and the words are: BLAZE, BUST, SUNBURN, WORSEN.

What are the green words in today's Connections?

The green grouping is meant to be the second-easiest. Today's green category theme is UNInterrupted, and the words are: CONSECUTIVE, NOT BREAK, PERSISTENT, UNENDING.

What are the blue words in today's Connections?

The blue grouping is usually the second-hardest. Today's blue category theme is Diverse PALETTE, and the words are: TENT, COUCH, PLATE, TASTING.

What are the purple words in today's Connections?

The purple grouping is considered the hardest. Today's purple category theme is SITCOM SIGNATURES, and the words are: FRIENDS, CO-OP, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, CHEERS.

How I solved today's Connections

Upon first look, I noticed two probable categories: One revolving around a variety of small dishes at a restaurant (TENT, COUCH, PLATE, TASTING); and one related to poker hands (FLUSH, STRAIGHT, FULL HOUSE). However, I think the airport category is just a red herring, as are the poker-related words.

Let's test the restaurant category first: TENT, COUCH, PLATE, TASTING. 🟦

Ah, I'm guessing CONSECUTIVE, NOT BREAK, PERSISTENT, and UNENDING refer to words that typically follow one another. 🟩

This essentially eliminates the poker category.

I believe I detect a TV comedy category with FRIENDS, CO-OP, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, and CHEERS. Oops, it should be COACH instead of CHEERS. I mistook the TV show about wrestling for something more popular. 🟪

That leaves BLAZE, BUST, SUNBURN, and WORSEN, which are all words used to describe someone's face in embarrassing situations. 🟨

Connections game rules

I've created a complete guide to playing Connections, but here's a brief overview of the rules:

First, locate the Connections game either on the New York Times website or in their Games app (previously known as the Crossword app). You'll see a game board with 16 tiles, each containing one word or phrase. Your task is to identify a group of four tiles that share a commonality. Sometimes, they are all variations of the same object (e.g., RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are various forms of precipitation), but other times, there's a play on words (e.g., BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH are all types of lists).

Select four items and hit the "Submit" button. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will be revealed. (Yellow is usually the simplest, followed by green, then blue, and finally purple.) If your guess was incorrect, you can try again.

To triumph in Connections, it's crucial to understand that the groupings can be deceptively complex. You'll often encounter overlapping categories. For instance, one instance appeared to incorporate six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. But surprise! BACON turned out to be part of a group of artists (alongside CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER), and EGG was included in a category of things that come in groups of twelve (along with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). So, remember to double-check your four-group selection to ensure it's solely composed of those four items before hitting "submit."

Should you find yourself at a loss, another strategy is to focus on words that appear to have no connection to the others. For example, if WHISTLER only brings to mind the painting famously titled "Whistler's Mother," you might be on to something. I discovered this by conducting a quick Google search to find out if there was indeed an artist named Close, as Close didn't seem to fit into any obvious themes either.

A third strategy, when you're truly stuck, is to indulge in a few helpful hints. That's where our daily tips come in handy! So, be sure to check back tomorrow for the next puzzle!

Nyt's Connections game today includes a category titled 'Sitcom Signatures', where the words are 'Friends', 'Co-op', 'Saturday Night Live', and 'Coach' instead of 'Cheers'. In entertainment news, some connections answer today's Connections puzzle, including the yellow category with words 'Blaze', 'Bust', 'Sunburn', and 'Worsen'.
