A heads up on the challenging parts

Exercise caution before you submit your answers for the playground category, as it contains some misleading options.

A TEETOTALER is someone who abstains from alcohol.

There isn't actually a category involving the "tee" sound, despite the abundance of such words on the board.

What are the categories for today's Connections?

  • Yellow: EQUIPMENT ON THE PLAYGROUND
  • Green: THINGS AT THE END OF A STRING OR CORD

  • Purple: TITLES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

The yellow page contains the most straightforward category. Today's yellow group theme is EQUIPMENT ON THE PLAYGROUND, and the words are: MONKEY BARS, SLIDE, SWINGS, TEETER-TOTTER.

What are the green words for today's Connections?

The green category is supposed to be second in difficulty. Today's green category theme is THINGS AT THE END OF A STRING OR CORD, and the words are: PENDULUM, TEA BAG, TETHERBALL, YO-YO.

What are the blue words for today's Connections?

The blue category is considered the second-hardest. Today's blue category theme is DECRIBED BY A WORD THAT MEANS DRY, and the words are: DESERT, HUMOR, MARTINI, TEETOTALER.

What are the purple words for today's Connections?

The purple category is considered the hardest. Today's purple group theme is TITLES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN, and the words are: BLUES, BOOMER, STEPS, TEETH.

How I solved today's Connections

Today's board presents some intriguing possibilities. I notice some playground equipment featured, which might provide a category.

Should I pursue MONKEY BARS, TETHERBALL, SLIDE, and TEETER-TOTTER for a possible category? Let's keep looking and see if there are any more eliminations with another category.

PENDULUM, YO-YO, and TEETER-TOTTER all share a back-and-forth motion, eliminating the playground category I was considering. But TEATHERBALL, TEA BAG, and TEETER-TOTTER are all objects that can be suspended by a string. That one seems the strongest, so let's try it. 🟩

Now let's attempt MONKEY BARS, SLIDE, and SWINGS, seen as the playground equipment. 🟨

Ah! I've got it - MARTINI, DESERT, TEETOTALER, and HUMOR are all terms that can be described as "dry." To clarify, a dry martini contains less vermouth, and a teetotaler is someone who does not drink alcohol - also known as being "dry." 🟦

That leaves BOOMER, BLUES, STEPS, and TEETH. Hmm. BOOMER is commonly used for generations of people born during certain time periods, while BLUES refers to a type of music and feelings of sadness. STEPS refers to small advancements, and TEETH can refer to the first teeth of a baby. 🟪

Discover the Connections game, either on the New York Times' official website or within their Games app, previously known as the Crossword app. Upon opening, you'll encounter a 16-tile game board, each tile containing a single word or phrase. Your task is to recognize a cluster of four tiles that share a common element. Sometimes, this element is a shared category (like RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW, all being examples of precipitation) but other times, wordplay is involved (such as BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH, all being types of lists: bucket list, guest list, etc.).

Select your four items and press the Submit button. A correct guess will unveil the category and color rating (with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, then blue, and finally purple). Incorrect guesses provide an opportunity for another try.

Victory is achieved once all four groupings have been correctly identified. However, if four errors are committed prior to completion, the game finishes and the answers are revealed.

Strategy for winning Connections

Gatekeepers to winning Connections should be aware that groupings can be deceptive – expect overlapping categories. For instance, a puzzle appeared to feature six breakfast items: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. However, BACON was assigned to a group of artists side-by-side with CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG was part of a group of items available in dozens (along with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). So confirm that your selected group consists of only four unique items before submitting.

When faced with a challenge, consider examining the words with semblances of no connection. If solely associating WHISTLER with "Whistler's Mother" painting dictates your thought process, then further investigation might be necessary. I applied this method when solving that particular puzzle, eventually searching Google to find out if there existed a painter named Close to fit the puzzle.

Another viable strategy when stuck is to consult hints – the very purpose of our daily sharing tips. Tune in tomorrow for the next puzzle's hint!
