Underneath FOLD is PAGE.

Finally, I located BYLINE.

Playing Strands:

Find the Strands game on the New York Times website. Strands is still in beta, so it's not yet on the NYT Games app.

If you start playing, you'll see a game board with a group of letters next to a clue hinting at the theme (e.g., "Better with age"). Your goal is to identify hidden words that align with the puzzle's theme.

Strands' mechanics:

The most crucial word to find is the "spangram," which explicitly states the puzzle's theme. For instance, for the "Better with age" puzzle, the spangram is FERMENTED, describing products that improve with time. The spangram spans the entire game board, horizontally or vertically. Once you find it, it will be highlighted in yellow. Finding the spangram makes the rest of the puzzle much simpler to solve.

Words in Strands can move in any direction (up, down, left, right, or diagonal), and you'll only use each letter once. There is only one correct solution. When you locate one of the puzzle's words (such as KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI), it will be highlighted in blue.

If you're stuck, you can submit any non-theme words you see that are four letters or longer to receive credit for a single hint. If you submit three non-theme words, the "Hint" button will become clickable. If you click it, all letters in one theme word will be highlighted. You'll still need to arrange these highlighted letters correctly to form the theme word. If a theme word already has a hint available and you use another hint before finding it, the word's letter order will be revealed.

Winning Strands:

Unlike other NYT games like Connections and Wordle, you can't fail Strands. When you enter guesses, you'll either find an answer, get credit for a hint, or the game board will shake, indicating that the word you entered is too short or not valid. You can't exhaust your guesses, and there's no time pressure.

You win when you've identified the spangram and all the theme words using the letters on the board. Like other NYT games, once you're done, you'll receive a shareable card showing your performance: blue dots represent theme words you located, the yellow dot indicates when you found the spangram, and a lightbulb signifies words where you used a hint.
