Caution: Spoilers Loom Ahead for Connections Solvers

We're about to disclose some of the answers. Proceed slowly if you don't want everything spoiled. (The complete solution is a bit further down.)

A Reminder About the Challenging Parts

Some words have multiple meanings. RIVET, for instance, is not a metal bolt; instead, it's related to something riveting or enthralling.

Look out for a large batch of words beginning with P in today's puzzle. Although they may all seem connected initially, they belong to two separate categories. (Watch for the letters in use.)

If you've enjoyed a notable movie featuring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, you'll find today's purple category more manageable.

What Exactly are the Categories in Today's Connections?

  • Yellow: CAPTURE ATTENTION
  • Green: USE YOUR CAMERA TO...
  • Blue: REARRANGE LETTERS (ANAGRAMS)
  • Purple: GOOD-LOOKING

An Urgent Warning: The Solutions are Right Below

Are you ready to find the answers to today's Connections puzzle? Here they are:

Which words in yellow category of Connections belong together?

The yellow grouping is generally thought to be the simplest. The theme for this category is CAPTURE ATTENTION, with these words: ABSORB, ENGAGE, HOLD, RIVET.

Which words in the green category of Connections are similar?

The green grouping is considered the second-easiest. The theme for today's green category is USE YOUR CAMERA TO..., with these words: FILM, RECORD, SHOOT, TAPE.

What words in the blue category of Connections share a common element?

The blue grouping is somewhat more difficult. The theme for today's blue category is REARRANGE LETTERS (ANAGRAMS), with these words: PASTEL, PETALS, PLEATS, STAPLE.

The purple grouping is considered the hardest. The theme for today's purple category is GOOD-LOOKING, with these words: GOOD, PENNY, PLEASE, WOMAN.

How I Solved Today's Connections

RECORD, FILM, TAPE, and SHOOT appear to suit as verbs concerning video filming. ✅

GRAB, HOLD, ENGAGE, and RIVET (similar to "riveting") align as words referring to capturing somebody's attention. ✔️

The remaining words don't appear to be obviously related, which usually signifies there's a fill-in-the-blank or a play on words category. Perhaps there's a "GOOD-LOOKING" category with PENNY (saying "a pretty penny" suggests significant expense), PLEASE, GOOD, and WOMAN. ✔️

STAPLE, PETALS, PASTEL, and PLEATS appear to be anagrams, meaning you can create PASTEL, PLEATS, PETALS, and STAPLE from the same set of letters. ✔️

The Art of Playing Connections

Check out my detailed guide on playing the Connections game for further insights:

  1. Visit the New York Times website or their Games app (formerly Crossword app) to access the Connections game.
  2. You'll see a game board with 16 tiles, each with a word or phrase. Your job is to identify a group of four tiles with a connection, such as theme, meaning, or wordplay.
  3. For the majority of puzzles, the four words will be grouped by theme. For example: RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all types of wet weather.
  4. Some puzzles feature wordplay, where the themes aren't instantly apparent. For instance, BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH are all types of lists.
  5. With practice and patience, you'll find connections in various themes and wordplay categories, helping you solve the Connections puzzle.

In order to win this game, you need to select four different items that belong to the same category and the same color. Once you've picked them, press the 'Submit' button. If your guess is correct, the category and color will appear. Keep in mind that the yellow category is the easiest one, followed by green, then blue, and finally purple.

To win Connections, you must successfully identify all four groups. However, if you make a mistake more than three times, the game will end, and the answers will be shown.

Tips to Win Connections

The key to winning this game is understanding that the connections between items can be challenging. For example, one puzzle had six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. But BACON was actually part of a group of painters alongside CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER. Meanwhile, EGG belonged to a group of items that come by the dozen (along with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). Therefore, it's crucial to make sure your group of four contains only those four related items.

If you're having difficulty, try looking at the words that seem to have no connection to the others. For instance, if you immediately think of "Whistler's Mother" when you see WHISTLER, you might be onto something. In that instance, I had to search if there was a painter named Close, since Close didn't seem to fit any apparent themes either.

Another approach when stuck is to seek some advice. That's why we share these tips every day. Stay tuned for the next puzzle!
