How to play Wordle

Wordle is located here on the New York Times website. A fresh puzzle becomes available each day at midnight, according to your local time.

Get started by guessing a five-letter word. If the letters match exactly and are in the correct positions, they will turn bright green. If the letters match, but their positions are not correct, they will turn yellow. If the letters do not appear in the day's secret word at all, they will be gray. For more details, check out our guide to playing Wordle here, and my advanced strategy guide here. (Additional information can be found at the end of this post.)

Wordle fundamentals explained

The primary objective of Wordle is to guess the day's secret word. Upon launching the game, you'll see an empty grid filled with letters. It is up to you to initiate the game: enter any five-letter word.

Now, you can utilize the colors that have been revealed to gain clues about the word: Green signifies that you correctly guessed a letter and it is in the correct position (for example, if you guess PARTY, and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green).

  • Yellow indicates that the letter is found somewhere within the word, but not in the position you selected (for example, if you guess PARTY, but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A, and T will all be yellow).
  • Gray signifies that the letter is not found in the solution word at all (if you guess PARTY, and everything is gray, it means that the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST).

With this information in mind, make another guess, and then another, attempting to accurately identify the secret word before you exhaust your chances. You have six attempts, and after that, it's game over.

The top introductory words for Wordle

What should you opt for as your first guess? The best options normally include common letters to elevate the likelihood of receiving yellow and green squares to guide your guessing. (Even if you receive all grays when guessing common letters, this information is still valuable for ruling out possibilities.) There isn't a single "best" starting word, but the New York Times' Wordle analysis bot has suggested starting with one of these:

  • CRANE
  • TRACE
  • SLANT
  • CRATE
  • CARTE

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis uncovered that you will exclude the most possibilities in the first round by starting with one of these:

  • SALET
  • REAST
  • TRACE
  • CRATE
  • SLATE

Other viable options might be ARISE or ROUND. Words such as ADIEU and AUDIO include more vowels, but you might argue that it is better to focus on consonants at the beginning, with a starter like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy, and see how it unfolds.

Mastering Wordle

We have several guides to Wordle strategy, which you may find interesting if you're a dedicated student of the game. This one explains how to use consonants to your advantage, while this one emphasizes a strategy involving the most common letters. In this advanced guide, we cover a three-pronged approach for gaining hints while maximizing your chances of winning quickly.

The most significant factor separating Wordle victors from Wordle losers is that victors utilize their guesses to acquire information regarding the letters within the word. If you know that the word must end in -OUND, don't waste four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you know the solution.

Another point to consider in strategy: Originally, Wordle utilized around 2,300 solution words, but post-purchase by the NYT, the game incorporates an editor who personally selects the solutions. Occasionally, these choices might be somewhat challenging words that wouldn't have qualified for the original list, or they could be current topics. For instance, FEAST served as the solution during Thanksgiving. Keep in mind that a theme might be present.

Alternatives to Wordle

If you crave more five-letter guessing games and related activities, here are the top Wordle alternatives, sorted by difficulty:

  • Wheeldle, which lets you engage in a continuous string of puzzles
  • Dordle and Quordle, which ask you to tackle two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles simultaneously, while utilizing the same guesses. There's also Octordle, with eight puzzles, and Sedecordle, with an astounding 16.
  • Waffle, which displays multiple five-letter words, jumbled in a grid. You conquer it by rearranging the letters efficiently until you crack the code.
  • Absurdle, which alters the solution following each guess, yet it has to adhere to its previous feedback. You must skillfully maneuver it into a troublesome spot, with only one possible word remaining. Guess correctly to achieve triumph.
  • Squabble, with which you faces off against other players in Wordle with a ticking clock. Your score suffers if you pause excessively between guesses; the last participant standing emerges victorious.
  • Antiwordle, which requires you to evade guessing the day’s solution. You're thrust into a challenging position if you erroneously guess certain letters. The longer it takes you, the better your performance in the game.
  • To enjoy a different type of word game, you might want to try 'Wheeldle', which offers a continuous series of Wordle-like puzzles.
  • If you're seeking a more challenging encounter, you could experiment with 'Dordle' or 'Quordle', which require you to solve two or four puzzles at once using the same set of guesses. For the truly daring, there's 'Octordle' with eight puzzles or 'Sedecordle' featuring an impressive sixteen.
