Dachshund freed from den after hours of work

Helpers have freed a dachshund from an animal burrow in an operation that took hours and with the help of heavy equipment. On Friday evening, the dog had suddenly disappeared into the entrance hole of the burrow, which was around 25 centimetres wide, on the shore of Lake Elfrath in Krefeld and was unable to get out on its own. The dog's owners alerted the fire department, which arrived with a volunteer fire-fighting team.

With the help of a sewer camera, the animal was located in a corridor of the building. However, the helpers tried in vain to dig up the ground with shovels to get to the stuck dachshund. Dense roots prevented this, a spokesperson explained on Saturday. A neighboring landscape gardener was finally called in to help, who used a small excavator to reach the animal. After a total of six hours, the happy dog owners were able to embrace their dachshund safe and sound, it was said.

In such emergencies, swift action from animal rescuer teams is crucial to ensure the safety of animals. Despite the efforts of the fire department and the dog's owners, the dachshund's predicament highlighted the need for specialized equipment and expertise, as common tools like shovels were ineffective due to the dense roots.
