Cyberattack on twelve Swabian municipalities
Criminal hackers have partially paralyzed the administration in twelve Swabian municipalities. The special-purpose association for municipal data processing in the Neu-Ulm district has "fallen victim to a cyberattack and is down as a data center for the affiliated municipalities until further notice," according to the website of the Altenstadt administrative community. This was previously reported by several media outlets.
According to the administrative community, the work of the respective citizens' offices with the residents' registration office and passport office, the municipal cash registers and the cemeteries are particularly affected. "There will be considerable restrictions in the affected administrative offices for some time," the note said. "Citizens are advised to call the town hall first to find out whether the desired request can currently be processed before making a personal appointment."
Eleven municipalities in the district of Neu-Ulm and one from the district of Augsburg belong to the special-purpose association.
The cyberattack has pose significant challenges for municipalities in two districts, affecting services such as citizens' offices, residents' registration, and passport offices. Local authorities are urging residents to contact town halls before making appointments, as many cyber-related actions have temporarily disrupted these services.
