Customs officers prevent coral smuggling
Customs officials at Hanover Airport have prevented the smuggling of protected corals. Two kilograms of coral fragments were discovered in the luggage of a traveler from Indonesia on Tuesday last week, the main customs office in Hanover announced on Monday. The total of 18 coral fragments are protected species and may not be imported without the necessary documents. On the same day, officials found eleven coral fragments on another traveler from the USA, said customs spokeswoman Joline Kassner.
The stony coral is reportedly protected under the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Customs seized the fragments.
The prevention of coral smuggling is crucial for nature conservation, as the trade of protected corals contributes to their environmental decline. Failure to comply with the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora can lead to legal consequences and threats to the balance of marine ecosystems.
