Investigations - Customs: 84 people illegally employed in food company
Customs have identified 84 illegally employed workers at a food company in Schleswig-Holstein. The people were staying in Germany illegally or were unable to present a work permit, as reported by customs on Wednesday. The checks at the two company sites in the Kaltenkirchen area (Segeberg district) and Elmshorn (Pinneberg district) were one of the most extensive inspections carried out by the Itzehoe main customs office's illegal employment financial control unit this year.
Around 170 customs officers were involved in the operation on Wednesday night with the support of the federal police and immigration authorities. The operation was preceded by an anonymous tip-off about 30 suspected illegal workers in the company's logistics department. According to the information provided, there were already indications during the examination of business documents. The suspicion of irregularities at subcontractors had increased.
According to the customs authorities, 344 employees from 13 companies were checked during the night. In addition to violations of the right of residence, the minimum wage law and social security obligations, four people were also found to be wanted for arrest.
