DFB Cup - Cup evening: Hertha win on penalties against HSV

Hertha BSC are keeping their fans dreaming of the final in their own stadium. After a dramatic DFB Cup evening against Hamburger SV, the second division club from Berlin advanced to the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. Hertha won 5:3 in a penalty shoot-out. After 120 minutes, the score at the Olympiastadion was 3:3 (3:3, 2:2). In the penalty shoot-out, Hertha goalkeeper Tjark Ernst saved against Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer, after which Fabian Reese scored the lucky winner.

In front of 58,946 spectators, including several thousand HSV fans, Reese initially put Hertha ahead under coach Pal Dardai (21st minute). Immanuel Pherai (31) and Laszlo Benes (43) struck back before Reese equalized (90). Berlin-born Königsdörffer (102) scored first for HSV in extra time, before Jonjoe Kenny (120) equalized again late on for the Berliners - and sent them into the ultimately successful penalty shoot-out.

The Berliners initially took control of the game, were aggressive in tackles and patient in the build-up. Reese, once again in strong form, initiated his own goal with a solo run. First he shot the ball against the post, then the rebound into the goal.

However, a small gap was enough for Pherai to score the equalizer with a well-placed shot from just over 25 metres out. Hamburg got into the game better. Shortly afterwards, Hertha keeper Tjark Ernst was only able to clear a slipped cross at the feet of Benes.

Hertha were the better team again after the break and went on the attack. Reese was on hand again and scored with a shot from the edge of the box. In extra time, substitute Robert Glatzel crossed for Königsdörffer, who also headed in. Kenny was then successful with the last action.
