Processes - Crossbowman speaks of "voices in his head"

Following the attack with a crossbow on a young man at Pein railroad station, so-called security proceedings have been opened against a 29-year-old man. The public prosecutor's office in Hildesheim assumes that the man committed the crime in June due to a mental illness in a state of incapacity. The aim is to place the accused in a psychiatric hospital on a permanent basis "due to his continued dangerousness", the Hildesheim district court announced. The man is accused of dangerous bodily harm and threats.

The suspect made a personal statement at the start of the trial on Wednesday. He had previously generally admitted the crime to the investigators. There are also cell phone videos of him at the station. According to the court spokesman, the accused said during the trial that he had drunk three quarters of a bottle of whisky on June 17 and therefore had no memory of the attack.

On the day of the attack, the 29-year-old German was wearing a T-shirt of a right-wing extremist band and had a large knife with him. Investigators were also looking into the suspicion of whether it was a racist act and whether he had deliberately chosen his victim.

According to the spokesman, the accused said in court that he had distanced himself from the right-wing scene for a year. "Voices in his head" had told him to do bad things. The 22-year-old, who has Syrian roots, was a victim of chance. He was seriously, but not life-threateningly, injured by an arrow to the back. The young man is appearing as a co-plaintiff in the protective proceedings.
