Local political contests, often referred to as "state elections" - Criticizes Election Campaign Populism in Saxony by Köpping
SPD's Leading Candidate and Social Minister Petra Köpping Criticizes Four Parties in Saxony's Election Campaign for Populism. She pointed out in Dresden that they were putting forth unsubstantiated claims. Besides AfD, she mentioned the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), Free Voters, and the far-right Free Saxons as the parties under scrutiny.
In regards to the Free Voters, she expressed her frustration with the constant put-down of the country: "It really bothers me that this country is constantly belittled. I see what incredible things the people in this country have accomplished. For 34 years, they've transformed a devastated region into a truly remarkable country." These accomplishments should not be undermined by a populist administration.
Köpping claimed that the far-right Free Saxons were spreading misinformation, falsehoods, and defamation during the election campaign, which is negatively impacting society's atmosphere. These effects are now also evident in local councils.
BSW as "the Mystery Candidate"
Köpping described BSW as "the Mystery Candidate" in the race. BSW leader Sahra Wagenknecht declared that her alliance would only join a state government that categorically rejects the deployment of US missiles in Germany. "We'll see what weight this statement carries after the election," said Köpping. When it comes time for coalition negotiations, one must consider what real substance there is.
BSW chairwoman Sabine Zimmermann frequently complained about being maligned during the election campaign.
Alliance of CDU, SPD, and BSW?
A new Saxony parliament will be elected on September 1. As per polls, BSW currently has values of up to 15 percent. It could potentially form a coalition with CDU and SPD. According to current poll results, this alliance is the most likely.
Köpping believes it's essential that the Saxons elect a stable government to avoid uncertainties in the future. Security is one of the most important topics for the people - "security regarding peace, but also security regarding a government." BSW's election program contains numerous generalities, but no specific details. "I don't think much of being influenced by Saarland," said Köpping, referring to Wagenknecht's place of residence.
The SPD's Leading Candidate Petra Köpping expressed her concern about the Free Voters' constant belittling of the country, stating that the accomplishments of the German people should not be undermined by a populist administration. Furthermore, Köpping highlighted BSW as "the Mystery Candidate" in the election, noting the lack of concrete details in their election program.
