Crisis: Hannover 96 messes up the end of the year

Back in November, Hannover 96 was still a candidate for promotion. That is over for the time being after the 3-0 defeat in Kiel. And 96 is not only in crisis on the pitch.

Bundesliga 2 - Crisis: Hannover 96 messes up the end of the year

Hannover 96 had imagined this Christmas break to be very different. At the beginning of November, the Lower Saxons were still a beaming derby winner and promotion contender after their 2:0 win against Braunschweig. Six weeks later, however, after the 0:3 (0:3) at Holstein Kiel in the last game of the year, the club is in a tangible crisis at all levels.

In terms of club politics, the conflict between professional soccer boss Martin Kind and the management of parent club Hannover 96 e.V. is escalating once again due to the vote on the entry of investors into the German Football League. And in sporting terms, after just one win from the last nine second division games, the issue is once again the job security of coach Stefan Leitl.

"It's bitter that we're going into the winter break like this and that this impression remains to some extent," said the 46-year-old in Kiel. "Because that doesn't actually reflect my team and because we've been stable in the past."

However, this stability was lost after the Braunschweig game. After the goals conceded by Timo Becker (26th minute) and Fiete Arp (27th/45th) on Saturday evening, the 96ers are now already eleven points behind Kiel. HSV, who are in the relegation places, are also already seven points adrift.

Hannover have lost touch with the promotion places for the time being after the end of the first half of the season. One reason for this is their poor record against top teams such as Holstein Kiel. Fifth-placed SpVgg Greuther Fürth is the only opponent from the top half of the table that the 96ers have managed to beat so far.

"We now have to free ourselves a bit from the situation in the table and make sure that we score again in the second half of the season," said captain Ron-Robert Zieler.
