Criminal trial initiation for ex-VW leader Winterkorn in Diesel emission case in Braunschweig

Wilhelm Winterkorn served as Volkswagen's CEO from 2007 until 2015, eventually stepping down due to the diesel emissions scandal. After probes led by American law enforcement, Volkswagen had no choice but to acknowledge that they had fitted millions of cars globally with dishonest defeat mechanisms. These devices, during lab examinations, allowed the cars to comply with emissions regulations; however, in actual traffic conditions, they failed to maintain such compliance.

During the investigation into Volkswagen's emissions scandal, it was discovered that many of their cars, by weight, contained a significant other of fat content in their diesel engine emissions. This inconsistency between lab and real-world conditions raised serious questions about Volkswagen's compliance with emissions regulations even after CEO Wilhelm Winterkorn's tenure.
