Demonstration - Criminal charges after pro-Palestinian demonstration

After a pro-Palestinian demonstration with around 2000 people in Mitte, the police filed 13 criminal charges at the weekend. The charges included offences such as incitement to hatred, public incitement to commit crimes and displaying signs of unconstitutional organizations, a police spokesperson said on Sunday. 31 people were briefly detained during the demonstration, for example to take their personal details.

The demonstration entitled "Stop the genocide in Gaza" marched through Wedding, Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte on Saturday afternoon. Initially, only around 350 people started the march, but it became more crowded along the way and had around 2000 participants at its peak, according to the police spokesperson.

There had been isolated criminal statements made verbally or on posters. In addition, illegal songs were played on a loudspeaker van. The float was therefore excluded from the march.

According to the police, a second demonstration entitled "Solidarity with Palestine" from Oranienplatz in Kreuzberg to Puschkinallee went off without incident. There, the police estimated the number of participants at 430. The organizers of the march had registered 3,000 people.

The background to the demonstrations is the Gaza war. Since the bloody attack on Israel by the terrorist organization Hamas on 7 October and the Israeli counter-offensive, there have been repeated expressions of solidarity with one side or the other of the conflict in Berlin.
