Cranach-Triegel altar has returned to Naumburg Cathedral

Naumburg Cathedral was only awarded World Heritage status in 2018. Last year, a cross-epochal art project inside caused lively discussions. The added altar left the cathedral - now it's back.

Art - Cranach-Triegel altar has returned to Naumburg Cathedral

On Saturday evening, the Cranach-Triegel altar, which had caused a fierce dispute over the World Heritage title, was reopened in Naumburg Cathedral. The return of the altar was celebrated with a musical vespers service performed by Catholic Bishop Gerhard Feige and the regional bishop of the Evangelical Church of Central Germany, Johann Schneider, among others. The altar will remain open until the beginning of Lent next year, according to a spokeswoman for the Vereinigte Domstifter Naumburg. It will then undergo a so-called "liturgical change", meaning that it will remain closed on weekdays and open at weekends and on church holidays.

The altar had caused heated discussions about the World Heritage title of Naumburg Cathedral. According to experts from the Icomos World Heritage Council, the work of art impairs the "extremely sensitive visual relationships in the west choir". Due to its location, there was even discussion about the possible revocation of the cathedral's World Heritage title. The artwork went on tour and was shown in the Diocesan Museum in Paderborn and in Klosterneuburg Abbey near Vienna. The return to Naumburg Cathedral was approved by the Unesco World Heritage Center in a letter to the German government, after the United Cathedral Foundations had submitted the project to the World Heritage Center for consideration last year on the advice of the State Chancellery.

The Leipzig painter Michael Triegel had completed the altarpiece created by Lukas Cranach the Elder between 1517 and 1519, which was later partially destroyed, and added a central section. The work of art first stood in the west choir of Naumburg Cathedral between the famous donor figures such as Uta von Naumburg from July to December 2022. The Vereinigte Domstifter see the altar there in its original location.

The painter Triegel is convinced that his work belongs in the west choir. "I deliberately created the altar for this place. It would look different if I had had a different location in mind from the outset. Certain iconographies, certain compositional things and also connotations in terms of content would not work at all elsewhere," the 54-year-old told the German Press Agency. In a different location, the altar would be a "museum picture", but no longer a liturgical centerpiece.
