Emsland - Cracks discovered in nuclear waste casks at shutdown nuclear power plant

Cracks have been discovered in the weld seams of the lids of nuclear waste drums at the shut-down Emsland nuclear power plant in Lingen. Three drums were affected, as announced by the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Environment on Tuesday. As a precautionary measure, all lids from the affected batch are to be replaced. The drum lid has a gripping ring for lifting, which is connected to the lid with ten internal and ten external weld seams. The cause of the cracks is now to be clarified. According to the ministry, there was no danger to the plant, personnel or the surrounding area at any time.

The containers with a volume of 200 liters are intended to hold low and medium-level radioactive waste from the power plant, which was shut down in April. The containers are being temporarily stored at the Emsland nuclear power plant until they are handed over to the federally-owned company for interim storage.

Damage to the cooling system at the plant was only discovered at the beginning of October. On two cell coolers, there was damage to bolts for fastening heating elements. According to the ministry, the findings had no impact on safety.

The power plant, which was opened in 1988, was one of the last three nuclear power plants in Germany to be taken off the grid for good on April 15.
