Justice Ruling: The Court Decides - Court refuses full rejection of Neubrandenburg's election results

The German Basic Democratic Party (Die Basis) tried to cancel and delay the Neubrandenburg city council elections. However, the court of Greifswald dismissed their motion, stating that an election review can only be conducted later through a complaint procedure. The party is now considering appealing this decision.

The reason for the motion was some faulty ballot papers during the city councilor vote on June 9, specifically in electoral district 1. The Schwerin Interior Ministry, which oversees the election, decided on May 27 to cancel and postpone the vote only in this specific district after consulting with the city. The opposition party argues that this would not prevent possible future tactical voting, as the results in other districts are already known.

The issue occurred in electoral district 1: While a candidate from the Basic Party should have been listed on the ballot, a different candidate was accidentally included, resulting in duplicate names. This error did not happen in districts 2 and 3.

Sven Lingreen, the Basic Party chairman, noted that, regardless of the legal decision, the entire election might need to be contested. According to him, this could have been avoided if the Interior Ministry had just extended the election postponement to the entire district.

Meanwhile, the elections for the county council and the European Parliament that were held alongside the city council vote on June 9 in all Neubrandenburg districts will proceed as scheduled.
