Court refuses absolute annulment of Neubrandenburg's election.

The election for city representatives in Neubrandenburg will not be completely postponed, as seen by the Greifswald Administrative Court, which dismissed a petition requesting a delay. It's possible to file an appeal.

The Basic Democratic Party of Germany, known as "Die Basis," experienced a temporary setback when they proposed a motion to reject and postpone the city council elections in Neubrandenburg. The Administrative Court of Greifswald recently deemed this motion inadmissible. According to the State and Local Election Law, any review of the municipal election can only be done later via an election complaint process, one of the court's officials shared on Wednesday. It's currently unclear whether "Die Basis" plans to appeal this decision to the Higher Administrative Court.

The need for this motion originated from erroneous ballots that affected the election of city councilors on June 9 in only one of the three electoral districts in Neubrandenburg. The Schwerin Interior Ministry, acting as the supervisory authority, decided on May 27 to cancel and postpone the election in the relevant electoral district 1. "Die Basis" finds this decision problematic because there's a potential for tactical voting behavior, considering the outcomes in the other two districts are known.

In electoral district 1, the incorrect ballots had already been sent to postal voters. The ballots should have listed a candidate from the Basis, but instead, a candidate from a different list was mistakenly added. This mistake did not occur in districts II and III.

Sven Lingreen, the chairperson of the Basis, pointed out that, despite the legal ruling, the entire election might need to be contested after the fact. Lingreen regrets that this could have been prevented by simply extending the postponement of the election by the Ministry to the entire electoral district.

The elections to the county council and the European Parliament, joined by Neubrandenburg's June 9 elections, can proceed as planned in all three electoral districts.
