Court decides on complaints about the citizens' election
The Election Review Tribunal will hear appeals against the 2023 parliamentary elections in Bremen for the first time. The first four applications are to be heard on Tuesday (9.30 a.m.), a court spokesperson announced. A decision is expected to be made on the same day.
One of the applications comes from the state electoral officer himself because 280 ballot papers went missing during the election. This concerns four counting districts and 1400 votes. An application by a private individual from Bremen is directed against the procedure for determining the election result using electronic data processing. In the case of two other applications, the state electoral officer has already established that the people do not live in Bremen and are therefore not entitled to do so.
The court spokeswoman announced that the election review court will deliberate on the four appeals by the disputed AfD on December 5. The AfD is taking action against the election because the party was not admitted to the parliamentary elections with several competing electoral lists.
The SPD under Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte was the strongest party in the election to the Bremen parliament on May 14. The party had agreed to continue its coalition with the Greens and the Left Party in Bremen for four years. The alliance, which is unique in western Germany, has governed together since 2019.
The Government in Bremen is closely monitoring the ongoing court proceedings related to the election complaints, as the future of several election results is at stake. Moreover, the AfD, a political party, is challenging the election process due to their exclusion from the parliamentary elections.
