Minister Behrens - Country for deportations to Syria and Afghanistan
Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) advocates for the deportation of foreign criminals, including to countries such as Syria or Afghanistan. "Anyone who poses a threat to our security has lost nothing here and must reckon with being deported to their home country – even to Syria or Afghanistan," said the SPD politician after a report in the "Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung" (Friday).
According to the Interior Ministry in Hannover, there are currently 51 extraditable criminals from Syria or Afghanistan in Lower Saxony. seventeen of them are reportedly in custody.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) had previously emphasized that the goal is to consistently deport violent criminals if they return to Germany after serving a prison sentence. As a result of the fatal knife attack in Mannheim, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) announced that the deportation of serious criminals and terrorist threats to Afghanistan and Syria would again be possible.
According to Faeser, there are significant progress behind the scenes regarding deportations via third countries, Behrens said. "Our experts are in close contact with the Federal Interior Ministry to ensure that deportations from Lower Saxony can take place immediately when there is a valid agreement with the target countries."
