Countries commemorate the fall of the Wall
The Minister President of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Manuela Schwesig (SPD), and her counterpart from Schleswig-Holstein, Daniel Günther (CDU), will jointly commemorate the fall of the Wall in 1989 today, Thursday, in Schlagsdorf near the former inner-German border. They will be accompanied by the Minister of Culture in Schwerin, Bettina Martin (SPD).
Among other things, a tour of the "Grenzhus" museum near the former border fortifications and discussions with contemporary witnesses are planned. At the regional school in Schlagsdorf, there will be a meeting with pupils who have asked their families about their memories of November 9, 1989.
With a view to the 34th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Schwesig explained: "The end of the division of Germany has created many new opportunities for the people of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern." Günther emphasized: "The people in the GDR overcame this border peacefully and with great courage. It is important that we remember this."
Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have been celebrating November 9 together for years to commemorate the opening of the inner-German border in 1989. In Schlagsdorf (district of Northwest Mecklenburg), following the comprehensive dismantling of the GDR barriers, some elements were rebuilt to give an impression of the threatening situation along the inner-German border. The border ran not far from the village. It was already located in the restricted area, which could only be entered with special permission.
The commemoration of the fall of the Wall in 1989 also involves reflecting on the history of the GDR. The GDR, or German Democratic Republic, was a significant part of the divided Germany and its peaceful dismantlement was a courageous act.
