Playing the Game of Basketball - Could Würzburg halt the Bayern basketball squad?

Ahead of the highly awaited championship matchup between FC Bayern and Alba Berlin, Bayern must eliminate the season's surprise team, the Würzburg Baskets. Bayern will go up against the Würzburg Baskets in a best-of-five series. "We know their confidence level is high," said Bayern coach Pablo Laso ahead of the first game on Wednesday (8:30 p.m.) in Munich's BMW Arena. "We're aware that we'll face a lot of unfamiliar situations, and we need to adapt to these conditions and make them work in our favor."

The Munich team, who had already won the cup, are obviously the favorites. Laso, who had to sideline players such as Sylvain Francisco and Nick Weiler-Babb due to injuries in the playoffs, is conscious of the effects of injuries on a team. "Injuries often create opportunities for other players, as Perry and Washington have demonstrated in Würzburg," said the coach.

Bayern has a measure of respect for Würzburg

The Würzburg team hasn't had such a significant triumph since 2012, when they lost to Ulm. This time around, the Baskets took down the defending champion with a 3-1 victory in the quarterfinals. The Bayern, with Niels Giffey sporting a carbon mask due to a broken nose, defeated Ludwigsburg with the same scoreline.

"Würzburg managed to defeat the reigning champion, so we have to face them with great respect, and we can't ignore their fighting spirit after our close 90-82 Bundesliga game in mid-April," Carsen Edwards said on behalf of the reserve players.

The Würzburg squad is, however, dealing with a major setback. Set player Otis Livingston II, the season's MVP, injured his ACL in the first ULM series match. He's out for the remainder of the season. In the ultimate game against ULM, Max Ugrai, Isaiah Washington, and Owen Klassen were also injured, while Julius Böhmer suffered a cruciate ligament tear and is also out.

Würzburg is facing a depleted roster

Coach Sasa Filipovski lauded his team's persistent nature: "These guys are incredible. They never give up." Würzburg could potentially pull off another upset. "The semifinals will be even more difficult, and with Julius Böhmer's injury, the roster is down to the bare minimum," said captain Felix Hoffmann. "Every player has to dig deeper and put in extra minutes for us to stand a chance."
