- Costlier regional vehicle categories affecting certain motorists in Thuringia
In Thuringia, around 190,000 motorists may witness an upgrade in their car insurance liability rating, as stated by GDV in Berlin, after reassessing accident risk factors. Conversely, around 136,000 drivers in Hildburghausen, Saale-Orla, and Ilm districts will experience reduced liability classes.
The unaffected districts include Suhl's Sonneberg, Saalfeld-Rudolstadt, the Weimarer Land, and the Kyffhäuser district, which will retain their existing liability classes. The annual classification is dependent on prior claim history, with higher rates in areas where insurers have frequently paid out.
GDV, Germany's insurance association, annually evaluates around 400 registration districts' claims balances and assigns them to regional classes without obligation. The regional classes will vary for drivers in seven districts of Thuringia, with 200,000 policyholders experiencing increased liability classes in comprehensive insurance. However, when it comes to partial comprehensive insurance, there are more favorable classifications. Specifically, around 110,000 drivers will enjoy reduced liability classes in eight districts, except for Hildburghausen, which will experience an increase in its partial comprehensive liability class.
The European Union might express its concerns if the ruling in this car insurance liability classification affects the rights of drivers in Thuringia, considering its regulations on consumer protection and free movement of services. The implementation of these changes in liability classes by GDV is largely influenced by the local claim history, which aligns with the principles of risk-based pricing, a common practice within the European Union's insurance market.
