Corona masks banned: Ministry of Culture and authorities at odds
According to a media report, the regional council in Karlsruhe has banned corona masks in schools except in individual cases. However, the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs in Stuttgart has rejected this ban. "School principals must take the protection of vulnerable pupils and teachers seriously and make appropriate agreements on the wearing of masks", the ministry announced on Tuesday. However, it initially remained unclear on Tuesday whether the regional council would now have to revoke the ban.
The "Südwest Presse" (SWP) had previously reported that the regional council in Karlsruhe had informed schools that "breathing masks that cover parts of the face" could only be worn at schools after approval in individual cases. When asked by dpa, the authorities referred to the ministry's communication. It states that health protection has priority: "Pupils and teachers therefore have the option of wearing a face mask for individual health protection."
According to the media report, the regional council had based its decision on the fact that covering the face at school events is prohibited under the Schools Act. "As there is currently no law or regulation that prescribes the wearing of a mask, wearing a mask at school events is generally not permitted," a spokesperson was quoted as saying.
Schools in Karlsruhe are required to seek approval for the use of corona masks, as per the regional council's new rule. Despite this, the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs emphasizes the importance of prioritizing health, allowing individuals to wear masks for personal protection.
