Corona aid: 20 million euros reclaimed so far

During the coronavirus pandemic, the state has supported businesses in need due to lockdowns and a slump in sales. "The total amount paid out in Bavaria across all programs amounts to 11.9 billion euros," the Ministry of Economic Affairs announced on Tuesday. But now comes the reckoning.

A ministry spokesperson in Munich said that the state had already finalized 60 percent of the new start-up aid and reclaimed almost 20 million euros. The reason: sales had not collapsed as much as expected when the application was submitted.

The federal government has extended the deadlines for the final settlement of the bridging, November and December aid. In the final calculation of the bridging aid, back payments are possible in addition to reclaims. "Since only just over 10 percent of the applications have been finally processed, no figures can be given here yet," said the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Nationwide, one in four companies that received state aid during the coronavirus crisis may have to repay some of it. This is according to a preliminary assessment by the Federal Ministry of Economics, which is available to Deutsche Presse-Agentur. However, around 40 percent of the companies will also receive additional payments from the federal government. This is based on random samples of the 338,000 applications submitted so far for the final settlement. Across Germany, 13.1 billion euros in emergency aid and 63.3 billion euros for programs such as the November, December and restart aid were paid out.

The economic policy in response to the Corona crisis has led to significant financial support for businesses in need. However, the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs has already reclaimed nearly 20 million euros from the new start-up aid due to sales not collapsing as much as expected.
