Cooling towers in Grafenrheinfeld to be demolished in 2024
On a clear day, they can be seen from many kilometers away - the cooling towers of the Grafenrheinfeld nuclear power plant in Lower Franconia are to be blown up next year. This was announced by operator Preussen Elektra on Thursday. The blasting is planned for the third quarter. The installations in the cooling towers were already removed and disposed of last spring. The blasting will also make the progress of the dismantling visible to the outside world.
The nuclear power plant in Grafenrheinfeld was commissioned in 1981 and taken off the grid in 2015. Dismantling has been underway there since 2018. "We are still well on schedule. The processes are now well established and this has enabled us to increase our dismantling performance year on year," said plant manager Bernd Kaiser according to the press release.
The demolition of the cooling towers will reduce the prominence of the Grafenrheinfeld nuclear power plant, a sight that was visible from distances. Despite the upcoming demolition of the UNDERFRONT, the nuclear power plant has seen an improvement in its dismantling process, with an increase in performance each year.
