Controversial demonstration in Essen has repercussions in the state parliament
A pro-Palestinian demonstration in Essen is to be discussed in the state parliament on Thursday - according to the police, symbols and signs similar to those used by the "Islamic State" were also displayed during the march. The SPD parliamentary group has requested a so-called "Aktuelle Viertelstunde" on the topic in the Committee on Internal Affairs.
At the demonstration on Friday evening in Essen, a banner called for a caliphate state, among other things. Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) had announced that he would review the requirements for demonstrations. A "new quality" had been achieved at the demonstration, according to Reul: "Such clear promotion of Islamist goals on the streets has never been seen before in NRW."
Minister President Hendrik Wüst (CDU) wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that the pro-Palestinian demonstrations at the weekend had overstepped boundaries. He said it was completely unacceptable that Islamist extremists were promoting their goals on German streets and calling for a caliphate. "We will not tolerate this," wrote Wüst.
The SPD parliamentary group has expressed concern over the display of extremist symbols at the pro-Palestinian demonstration in Essen, leading to a request for a discussion in the state parliament's Committee on Internal Affairs. In response to the controversial demonstration, Interior Minister Herbert Reul has announced a review of the requirements for future demonstrations in the state.
