- Continuous rain in Thuringia - flooded streets and cellars
Heavy rainfall has flooded streets and cellars in parts of Thuringia, causing damage. The northern part of the state was particularly affected by the persistent rain. However, the state capital of Erfurt also saw numerous deployments. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), there was more than a hundred liters of precipitation per square meter in less than twelve hours in the area around Nordhausen overnight on Friday.
Many streets in Nordhausen were flooded and closed. Cellars were also flooded, according to the city. The fire department was called out to numerous deployments to pump out cellars and make streets passable again. The persistent rain also caused water levels in the Unstrut catchment area to rise in the early morning hours.
Flood warnings and safety measures
The high water information center reported that the level at the Helme in Sundhausen exceeded level 3. The city is preparing to fill sandbags. The Zorge in Nordhausen and the Bere in Ilfeld reached the level for the start of notifications. However, it was not expected that the water levels would continue to rise. With the easing of precipitation, the water levels in the rivers would also drop quickly. "The heaviest precipitation is over," said a DWD spokesman.
According to the police, there were several accidents on the highways due to the weather, where cars drove into the guardrails, resulting mostly in minor injuries. In Erfurt, emergency services were out due to flooded cellars and underwater sidewalks and streets.
Due to the flooded underpass at the Erfurt main station, there were restrictions in bus and tram traffic. Water also entered the station building with shops.
The Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium in Erfurt remained closed on Friday due to damage to the school building caused by the rain. The school could not be entered, as stated on the website of the gymnasium.
The heavy rainfall in Erfurt resulted in flooded cellars and underwater sidewalks and streets, requiring the deployment of emergency services. The persistent rainfall also led to flooded streets and closed cellars in Nordhausen, requiring numerous deployments by the fire department.
