Recently, the decision was made to continue the rescue of the historical steamboat "Säntis" from the depths of Lake Constance. The Shipwreck Association revealed this news on Saturday in Romanshorn, Switzerland. Their decision comes after an overwhelming show of support from the community.
In late May, the second attempt to raise the steamboat from a depth of 210 meters to the surface fell short. This was due to the fact that the brakes on the winch, intended to lower the rescue platform onto the sunken ship, couldn't hold. Association President Silvan Paganini had mentioned that the project was coming to an end.
At that time, the association stated that they would cease operations after encountering several technical setbacks. They maintained that they would keep going as long as risks and costs were within reason and commensurate with preserving this "wonderful ship." It was said then, "There may be more attempts to reclaim the wreck and uncover its secrets in the years to come."
Now, the association is switching gears. According to their statement, the project might as well start from scratch, as the rescue platform was destroyed in the last attempt. However, they have gained two important insights from their former endeavors: A project of this complexity cannot be accomplished solely by volunteers. Professional assistance is necessary. Furthermore, enough money needs to be gathered in order to obtain the proper materials and ensure a seamless operation. This money will be obtained. "The association is certain that we can successfully raise the steamboat 'Säntis' with these modifications and with the continued backing of the public."
The steamboat sunk in May 1933 and was no longer seaworthy. It lies submerged in the middle of the lake between Romanshorn in Switzerland and Langenargen in Germany. It was initially determined that scrapping it was too costly. The 48-meter-long ship had been in operation on Lake Constance since 1892 and could carry 400 passengers. The first effort to save the submerged passenger vessel failed in mid-April due to technical issues.
The Shipwreck Association was established in 2023. Thus far, over 250,000 euros have been gathered for the rescue of the steamboat.
