Route network - Construction work: Delays and cancellations on many rail lines
Rail travelers in North Rhine-Westphalia will once again need to be particularly patient from this Sunday. There will be train delays and cancellations in the Rhineland and Ruhr region due to construction work, as announced by Deutsche Bahn (DB) in advance. The train drivers' union GDL had also previously announced a nationwide warning strike, which was to last until Friday evening.
DB is building an electronic interlocking system in the greater Cologne area at great expense. From December 10 to 15, trains on the ICE Sprinter line Bonn-Cologne-Berlin and the ICE line Koblenz/Bonn-Cologne-Hanover-Berlin will therefore start and end in Cologne; there will be no stop at Bonn Central Station. Trains scheduled to start in Koblenz will be diverted via the right bank of the Rhine and will not stop in Bonn and Cologne Central Station, but instead in Cologne Messe/Deutz.
From December 15 to 29, long-distance trains from Cologne in the direction of Düsseldorf will be diverted via Neuss - without stopping at Düsseldorf Airport. On regional services, there will be partial cancellations on numerous routes between December 10 and 29. The lines affected include the RE5, RB26, RB48 and RB30.
In the Ruhr region, construction work on two railroad bridges over the Autobahn 42 will lead to track closures between Wanne-Eickel and Recklinghausen-Süd, which are expected to last until mid-April 2024. This will result in serious restrictions to rail services. The RE2 between Essen and Düsseldorf will be canceled, the RE41 between Haltern am See and Bochum, and the RB46 between Bochum and Gelsenkirchen. According to DB, "detour, journey time extensions and stop cancellations are also unavoidable" on long-distance services during this time.
A new timetable will apply to long-distance rail services from this Sunday. DB promises improvements for the important route between Berlin and NRW. For example, there will be a new ICE line Berlin-Wuppertal-Cologne/Bonn. Additional journeys and fewer intermediate stops are planned on some existing lines.
