Aviation transportation - Construction on Hamburg Airport runway is now finished.
After a five-day maintenance process on one of the runways at Hamburg Airport, the runway reopened on a Friday afternoon. The airport authorities in Hamburg confirmed this development. Since Monday, this specific runway had been going through its yearly check-up where the rubber debris from aircraft tires was removed, drainage pipes were filled up, and markings were renewed. Furthermore, the runway lighting system's electric lines were inspected, replaced, or fixed if necessary.
Despite the ongoing maintenance, air traffic was not affected. While one of the runways was being worked on, the other was utilized by aircraft for takeoffs and landings. This other runway is scheduled for its yearly upkeep in September.
The intersection of these two runways allows planes to take off and land in any direction, thus ensuring smooth air traffic management. The German Air Navigation Services (DFS) air traffic controllers ascertain which runway pilots should use. During these periods, pilots typically decelerate and speed up with the wind for optimal lift and braking effectiveness.
The airport asserted that in Hamburg's regularly windy conditions, the preferred takeoff and landing direction may alter depending on current wind patterns. In 2023, the highest number of flights were recorded heading northwest, resulting in a 40% share of all takeoffs and landings. Approximately 28% of flights were recorded taking off or landing over the northeast and about 23% over the southwest.
