Construction of the Barleben State Criminal Office (LKA) is set to kick off in 2026, with a tentative timeline for the second quarter of that year. As of now, there's no official start date, but it's slated to wrap up in 2028.

Spread over a 7-hectare plot north of Magdeburg, the new LKA building will offer 20,000 square meters of office space and another 3,500 square meters for labs. Approximately 700 employees are expected to fit comfortably in the structure.

The move comes in the wake of discovering harmful fibers in the ceilings of the previous LKA building, which is situated in Magdeburg and Schönebeck (Salzlandkreis). Initially, plans included renovating the existing infrastructure, but ultimately, a new facility emerged as the preferred plan.

As of now, preliminary planning for the project is underway, according to a Finance Ministry spokesperson. This step is tentatively set to be completed in 2025's first half. Earlier construction-related tasks have already been executed, such as geological surveys, measurement projects, and archaeological investigations. The budget remains elusive, but it's speculated that the project could demand several hundred million euros.
