Construction of secondary raw materials center in Jänschwalde inaugurated
The construction of the secondary raw materials center (SERO Lausitz) on the site of the Jänschwalde open-cast mine was inaugurated with a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony on Wednesday. The facilities for the subsidiary of the energy company Leag will mainly be built in existing parts of the open-cast mine's buildings, as the company announced. The site is already being used for other industrial areas in view of the imminent end of coal mining.
The Sero-Center, which will one day operate exclusively with green electricity, is scheduled to go into operation on April 1, 2024. 50 jobs will be created and up to 635,000 tons of mineral building materials and waste will be processed annually.
Coal mining in the Jänschwalde open-cast mine will end on New Year's Eve - preparations are already underway to reclaim the landscape. The main operating plan for 2020 is valid until the end of the year. 50 meters of coal will be extracted from the open-cast mine for around three months longer by order of the State Mining Authority for safety measures.
SERO Lausitz could be followed by further industrial and commercial settlements on these areas. According to Leag, they are to be developed into the future Cottbus-Ost industrial park. The connection to the A15 highway and federal highways as well as a rail connection to the LEAG and Deutsche Bahn rail networks are ideal for this, explained Leag CEO Philipp Nellessen.
The new secondary raw materials center in Jänschwalde relies on raw materials extracted from mining operations. The energy required to operate the center will primarily come from renewable sources.
