Enjoying a leisurely time on the Hamburg Jungfernstieg with a beautiful view of Binnenalster is now more possible than before. Once upon a time, around 13,000 vehicles threatened the popular boulevard daily. However, in autumn 2020, only buses, taxis, cyclists, and delivery vehicles were allowed to use the road, making it car-free for the most part.

Now, the area is undergoing a makeover to enhance the experience and provide more room for pedestrians. The plan includes more greenery, more seating spots, more open spaces, and family-friendly options. The spokesperson for the German Press Agency's traffic authority says these changes are expected to be completed by winter. Most of the work should be finished by the annual Christmas market on Jungfernstieg, slated for mid-November 2024, with final planting taking place in the spring of 2025.

Right now, paving work is underway around the famous street. The new central islands where Neuer Jungfernstieg intersects are also being built. The asphalt work has already been completed. The spokesperson notes that the junction of Neuer Jungfernstieg has been modified to fit the new design, and vehicles can now move through it again.

Eventually, the vehicles will have less space than before - just 3.50 meters in each direction, along with a median strip measuring 3 meters wide to allow cyclists to navigate around stationary buses safely. Additionally, 13 new climate-resistant Hungarian silver linden trees will be planted along the waterfront side. The transformation of the area into a more pedestrian-friendly environment is expected to cost approximately 13 million euros. To date, the project is on track both in terms of schedule and budget.
