Outputs restricted - Consequences for other inmates after escape of offender
A convicted criminal from the Berlin Secure Custody Institution is still on the run. The search for the 57-year-old has been unsuccessful so far, according to Justice Senator Felicitas Badenberg (CDU) in the Legal Affairs Committee of the Berlin House of Representatives.
According to her statements, the incident has consequences for other inmates of the Secure Custody Institution of the Berlin Justice Prison Tegel: Exits for social contacts are currently not allowed. Before such relaxations are granted, conditions and procedures must be checked, Badenberg said.
Used toilet exit to escape
The 57-year-old used a monitored exit to visit his mother in Neukölln to escape on Saturday. He used a bathroom passage and "took advantage of a moment of inattention" to evade the two justice officials, the Senator explained.
The man was sentenced to five years in prison by the justice administration for bodily harm and rape. He had already served his sentence in 2015. Due to his dangerousness, he was then transferred to the Secure Custody Institution.
According to the justice administration, the offender could regularly leave the Secure Custody Institution. Forty-two exits had passed unnoticed. Now, he is believed to have "spontaneously decided" to escape, Badenberg said.
The man, who is approximately 1.73 meters tall, is being hunted with a photo, as the police and prosecutor's office announced. His appearance is described as corpulent. The 57-year-old has a shaved head and medium-length thin hair that is noticeably longer at the nape of his neck. In addition, he has a conspicuous tattoo in the form of a dragon on the outer side of his left upper arm.
Third case this year
This is the third time this year that convicted criminals in Berlin have used an exit for escape. About two weeks ago, a double murderer did not return to prison after an unmonitored exit. He was captured in Brandenburg at the residence of his half-brother after approximately 54 hours.
All relaxations have been revoked for him, Badenberg emphasized. In his case, the escape was likely a spontaneous decision.
In February, a 54-year-old from the Secure Custody Institution of the Berlin Justice Prison Tegel used an exit to escape. He was captured in Schleswig-Holstein after about three days.
