St. Pauli's Johannes Eggestein (l) celebrates his goal for 0:1 with teammate Marcel Hartel.

Confident FC St. Pauli gives SV Elversberg no chance

FC St. Pauli did not let the surprise team SV Elversberg stop them in the 2nd Bundesliga. The Hamburg side won 2:0 (2:0) at the promoted team from Saarland on Friday evening and remain unbeaten at the top of the table after the twelfth matchday. It was Elversberg's first defeat in seven games.

Johannes Eggestein (16) had put the visitors ahead with a header from a Marcel Hartel corner. Hartel (31) scored a quarter of an hour later with a shot from 20 meters under the crossbar. It was the sixth goal of the second division season for both Hamburg players.

Three days after reaching the last 16 of the DFB Cup against Schalke 04, Hamburg were once again convincing in a well-deserved victory. Coach Fabian Hürzeler's team controlled the game from the outset. The hosts only became more courageous after going behind. However, FC St. Pauli kept everything under control.

After the break, the Saarlanders struggled to increase the pressure. They hardly had any clear-cut chances against the solid Pauli defense. Meanwhile, Hamburg did little on the offensive. And yet they still had the better opportunities: Oladapo Afolayan (68') and Etienne Amenyido (84') both failed to hit the crossbar.

Despite SV Elversberg showing courage after falling behind, they couldn't manage to trouble FC St. Pauli in Bundesliga 2, as the league leaders maintained their clean sheet. The victory over Elversberg kept SV Elversberg's rival, FC St. Pauli, at the top of Bundesliga 2, having not lost a game in the league against SV Elversberg or any other team so far this season.
