Domestic policy - Conference of Interior Ministers on the threat of terrorism and anti-Semitism
The war in the Middle East, its impact on Germany, the threat of terrorism and anti-Semitism are among the central topics of the Conference of Interior Ministers (IMK) starting this Wednesday in Berlin. The conference will also discuss demonstrations by Palestinian groups and the right of assembly. The Israeli ambassador Ron Prosor and the President of the Central Council of Jews, Josef Schuster, have also been announced as guest speakers to the federal and state interior ministers.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) told the news portal "T-Online": "For me, the central theme of this conference of interior ministers is to continue to work together against the growing threat of Islamist terrorism and against the disgusting hatred towards Jews and Israel." The IMK must also send out a clear signal: "Jewish life is under the special protection of our state. We do everything we can for the safety of Jews in our country."
At the same time, she emphasized that there is an increased threat situation, particularly from Islamist terrorism. "Especially now, we must keep a close eye on Islamist threats and stop further radicalization processes."
Other topics at the three-day autumn conference in a hotel in Berlin-Lichtenberg, which Berlin is chairing this year, include refugee numbers and border controls. On the subject of migration, some of the countries' demands have been met since the last conference, or at least there are plans to do so. This applies to the federal government's contribution to the costs, which has been adjusted accordingly, as well as to additional border controls. Faeser ordered the controls at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland in mid-October.
A federal government bill being debated in the Bundestag stipulates that anyone who has committed an anti-Semitic crime cannot be naturalized. Before the start of the conference, it was heard from the circle of interior ministers that the federal government could possibly examine whether dual nationals could also be stripped of their German citizenship.
The IMK also wants to discuss the fight against increasing violent crime, sexualized depictions of violence against children through artificial intelligence, the reversal of the burden of proof in the confiscation of criminals' assets and security during the 2024 European Football Championship.
The Berlin Police Union (GdP) wants to focus "more clearly on the challenges and operational situations in the capital" at the IMK. There is "no event on this globe that does not have a timely impact on the security situation in the capital", said GdP regional head Stephan Weh.
Berlin has by far the highest and most complex deployment schedule for demonstrations, attracts refugees in particular and also has six European Championship matches and major fan events next summer. What is needed is a uniform national police and assembly law and significantly more support for the Berlin police from other federal states.
Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) had already called for harsher punishments for attacks on police officers, firefighters and paramedics before the IMK. The minimum sentence for such attacks should be increased from three to six months. Strobl intends to campaign for this in Berlin. This should reflect "the profound reprehensibility of violence against emergency services". "Anyone who harms those who protect us must be punished severely," Strobl emphasized.
