Middle East war - Conference of Interior Ministers discusses pro-Palestinian demonstrations

The terrorist attack by Islamist Hamas on Israel, the subsequent war and the effects on Germany are among the central topics of the Conference of Interior Ministers (IMK) starting this Wednesday in Berlin. The conference will also discuss demonstrations by Palestinian groups and the right of assembly. The Israeli ambassador Ron Prosor and the President of the Central Council of Jews, Josef Schuster, have also been announced as guest speakers to the federal and state interior ministers.

Other topics at the three-day autumn conference, which is being chaired by Berlin this year, include refugee numbers and border controls. Since the last conference, some of the federal states' demands on migration have been met or are at least being planned. This applies to the federal government's contribution to the costs, which has been adjusted in each case, as well as to additional border controls. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) ordered controls at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland in mid-October.

A draft law by the federal government, which is being discussed in the Bundestag, stipulates that anyone who has committed an anti-Semitic crime cannot be naturalized. Before the start of the conference, it was heard from the circle of interior ministers that the federal government could possibly examine whether dual nationals could also be stripped of their German citizenship.

The IMK also wants to discuss the fight against increasing violent crime, sexualized depictions of violence against children through artificial intelligence, the reversal of the burden of proof in the confiscation of criminals' assets and security during the 2024 European Football Championship.
