European Football Championship - Concerned faces on Berlin's EM fan mile

Many affected faces at the Berlin Fan Mile: After Germany's exit from the quarterfinals against Spain at the Berliner Brandenburg Gate, thousands of Germany fans were visibly distressed. "They are going home quieter than usual," reported a police spokesperson to the dpa in the evening. The Federal Police wrote on the platform X: "The influx of fans from the fan zones to the Berlin Main Station is running. The disappointment is in the air."

Due to the large influx, the two large fan zones at the Brandenburger Gate and in front of the Reichstag had been closed for security reasons long before the match began. The entire Fan Mile area had been expanded for all four quarterfinal matches on Friday and Saturday. A total capacity of 70,000 people is indicated.

Organizers and police had counted on tens of thousands of fans and asked them to come early. "Regardless of whom you support today at #ESPGER and whether you do it with chips, tapas, beer or orange juice (...) Make your way there early, then a good spot in the #FanZone is guaranteed for you," the police wrote on the internet. Several thousand policemen were on duty to secure the fan zones and accompany the celebrations.

The afternoon began with a concert by singer Peter Schilling. His hit "Major Tom" with the line "Completely detached" became an unofficial Euro Championship hymn in the course of the weeks.

The football festival in Berlin continues on Saturday evening, as Turkey plays the Netherlands in the Olympiastadion starting at 21.00 hours. A large influx is also expected at the Brandenburger Gate, according to the organizers. Turkish and Dutch fans will also celebrate before and after the game in the entire city and especially near the Ku'damm and the Messegelaende. On Saturday, the visit of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the game in Berlin has been announced.

  1. Despite Germany's loss in the Soccer EM quarterfinals against Spain at the Brandenburger Gate, the Federal Police anticipated a large influx of Soccer fans to Berlin Main Station after the match.
  2. The Fan Mile area had been expanded for all four quarterfinal matches, capable of accommodating up to 70,000 fans, including those supporting Spain and Germany.
  3. In the lead-up to the match, organizers and Police urged fans to arrive early to secure a spot at the Fan Mile or the fan zones near the Brandenburger Gate and Reichstag.
  4. Despite the closure of the fan zones for security reasons, Soccer fans still gathered at the Fan Mile, with many displaying their disappointment over Germany's exit from the tournament.
  5. As the European Football Championship continues, Turkish and Dutch fans are expected to gather at the Brandenburger Gate for Turkey's match against the Netherlands on Saturday evening, adding to the city's vibrant Soccer atmosphere.
