Completion of the Cologne stages delayed further

The years-long refurbishment of Cologne's stages has been delayed once again: the completion date is now set for June 28, 2024 - three months later than last planned. "We are aware that this is a difficult decision in many respects, which is why we have not made it easy for ourselves," said Technical Operations Manager Bernd Streitberger on Friday, according to a press release.

However, an analysis of the situation shows that many construction measures cannot be completed by the previously planned handover of the keys on March 22, 2024. "Handing over the buildings with so many exceptions makes no sense, so unfortunately we had no other choice here," said Streitberger.

The delay would also increase the costs further, to an estimated 686 million euros. In January, there was still talk of 674 million euros. At the start of the refurbishment in 2012, a good 250 million euros had been planned.

It is unclear whether the opera and theater will be able to open in the renovated building in autumn 2024 as last planned. "In light of the developments on the construction site and the changed processes, various scenarios for the opening of Offenbachplatz will be discussed and developed within the administration in the coming weeks," the press release stated. "As soon as this has been completed, a date for the opening of the venues can be announced." The Cologne Opera was originally scheduled to reopen in 2015.

The delayed completion of Cologne's music stages also affects the local theater, as both are part of the municipalities' cultural infrastructure. The refurbishment, initially planned to conclude in March 2024, will now include these venues until June 24, 2024.
