Parties - "Completely misguided": Opposition sharply attacks education policy

The opposition has sharply criticized the education policy of the green-black state government in the state parliament and called for greater commitment in this area. "This state has a huge problem with educational equality," criticized Stefan Fulst-Blei, education policy spokesperson for the SPD parliamentary group, in the state parliament in Stuttgart on Wednesday. Numerous children were failing to meet minimum standards in reading, writing and arithmetic, and educational success was heavily dependent on social background. "Who gets to spoon up the soup? It's precisely those whose parents don't have the means to provide extra tuition." Education policy must therefore be at the top of the government's list of priorities.

Pupils have performed poorly in the latest education studies in recent years. In 2022, the IQB education trend revealed massive deficits in elementary school; in the fall, the study showed that 28.7 percent of all ninth-graders failed to meet the minimum standards in reading and 32.3 percent in listening comprehension.

FDP education expert Timm Kern accused the government of a "completely misguided education policy". "If we want to maintain prosperity in our country, then we cannot afford a second-class education system," said Kern - but without making any specific demands of the state government.

Minister of Education Theresa Schopper rejected the criticism. "We must not pretend that everything here is in a precarious state," said the Green politician. We are already on the right track and are taking a close look at the problems. For example, in the transition from kindergarten to school, facilities will be created for children who are not yet ready for school due to a lack of language skills. The state has also created a so-called social index and increased the number of additional support staff such as educational assistants and volunteers.
