Holidays - Compassionate vigil for Hanukkah in front of Osnabrück synagogue
On the occasion of Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, there will be a vigil of solidarity in front of the synagogue in Osnabrück. The campaign is the result of a private initiative by Reinhart Richter from Osnabrück. The vigil is a sign of solidarity and compassion for Jewish people "who have to experience the unimaginable, the return of anti-Semitism", said the 84-year-old cultural consultant.
From Thursday until the end of the Festival of Lights next week, at least two volunteers will stand outside the synagogue every day between 7.00 am and 7.00 pm. They will be relieved after two hours. The guards will be provided by the Diocese of Osnabrück, the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation, the theater and the VfL Osnabrück sports club, among others. Lord Mayor Katharina Pötter (CDU) will take part in the solidarity vigil for the first time this Thursday (December 7) at 7.00 am.
The solidarity vigil will run daily until 7 p.m. at least until December 18, said the initiator. Many people have shown their willingness to take part.
The Hanukkah festival lasts eight days and refers to the rededication of the temple in Jerusalem in the second century BC and the tradition of a "miracle of light". During the eight-day festival, lights are lit one after the other on a candlestick.
Events are planned for the Festival of Lights in several places in Lower Saxony. In Hanover, for example, Eliah Sakakushev-von Bismarck, Director of Villa Seligmann, will talk about the history, symbolism and customs of the festival. Villa Seligmann is a Jewish cultural and music center. This Thursday, the Yiddish singer and cantor Sveta Kundish is expected to perform.

The solidarity vigil during Hanukkah is a testament to compassion and understanding, reflecting the spirit of religious tolerance in Germany. The initiative has garnered support from various organizations in Lower Saxony, including the Diocese of Osnabrück and the VfL Osnabrück sports club. The festival of lights, or Hanukkah, is a significant event in Judaism, marked by the rededication of the temple in Jerusalem and the lighting of a candlestick for eight days. Many people are eager to participate in the solidarity vigil, demonstrating a strong sense of solidarity and unity against anti-Semitism. In Hanover, the Festival of Lights will also feature events focusing on the history, symbolism, and customs of Hanukkah, with Eliah Sakakushev-von Bismarck and Yiddish singer Sveta Kundish scheduled to perform. Despite the ongoing struggles faced by the Jewish community, events like these serve as reminders of the importance of religious freedom and solidarity in Germany and beyond.
