Commissioner for Eastern Europe: East is a region of the future and a seismograph
For the Federal Government Commissioner for Eastern Germany, eastern Germany is a region of the future and a seismograph for developments throughout the country. "East Germany has a highly motivated and very well educated workforce as well as committed entrepreneurs," said Carsten Schneider (SPD) at the start of the "East Germany 2030 - Home and Future" conference in Leipzig on Friday. The region also has a head start in renewable energies.
The people of eastern Germany had rightly built up a level of prosperity, albeit a modest one, emphasized Schneider. However, there are still "massive differences in wealth between East and West Germany." In addition, only twelve percent of leading positions in science, the judiciary, media and other areas are held by East Germans. "I want more East Germans to sit at the table and have a say."
The conference will be attended by Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), the Minister President of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Manuela Schwesig (SPD) and the Minister Presidents of Thuringia (Bodo Ramelow/Die Linke), Saxony (Michael Kretschmer/CDU) and Saxony-Anhalt (Reiner Haseloff/CDU). Together with representatives from business, science and culture, they want to discuss how the future of eastern Germany can be positively shaped.
The Commissioner for Eastern Europe also sees the East as a region of the future and a seismograph, indicating its potential for predicting trends across Europe. Despite the progress made in eastern Germany, there's a need for more East Germans to hold leadership positions in various sectors.
