Federal Ministry of Agriculture - Commission presents plan for the future of Baltic Sea fisheries

The future of Baltic Sea fisheries in Germany is to be secured with a nine-point plan. In addition to better protection of habitats and an improvement in the ecological situation of the sea, the main focus is on adapting the fishing industry, according to the final report of the Leitbildkommission zur Zukunft der Ostseefischerei presented in Berlin on Monday.

New environmentally friendly fishing technologies are to be tested, for example to avoid unwanted bycatch. Fisheries management is to be further developed with an ecosystem-based approach. The port infrastructure for fishing should be modernized. Last but not least, the experts recommend broadening the income opportunities for fishermen, for example in the area of tourism.

The commission, commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, comprised 30 participants, including authorities, associations and scientists.
