A major disruption at Commerzbank occurred on November 25 and 26. A technical error led to serious consequences for clients of other banks.

The exact number of affected individuals is currently unknown. In November, there was an incident where banking fraudsters were able to empty the accounts of numerous clients.

The serious disruption at Commerzbank resulted in clients losing money

A Commerzbank spokesperson informed Business Insider that a technical error occurred with a service provider. This led to "incorrect bookings when clients of other banks withdrew cash from ATMs".

While Commerzbank clients were not affected, the bank plans to rectify the unauthorized transactions, but the timeline for the refund remains unclear.

It is clear, however, that this time, the technical error is not the fault of criminals.

Consumers should be aware that, in this case, according to Article 675u of the Civil Code (BGB), the bank is obligated to "promptly reimburse the payer the amount of the payment".

This is reassuring.

Furthermore, the bank must "restore the payment account to the level it would have been at if the funds had not been debited from it due to the unauthorized payment transaction."

Accordingly, clients should receive a full refund of all funds that were withdrawn from their accounts.

The affected bank customer confirmed to Business Insider that she received incorrect debits, as shown in the corresponding account statements. After withdrawing money from a Commerzbank ATM, the amounts were debited twice or thrice. It is unknown whether the Deutsche Bank customer has received her money back.

All affected customers are left with no choice but to wait and hope that all the money will be returned soon. There are no details on this matter, and more importantly, no exact timelines for the refund.

In reality, the situation is serious. For many people, these funds were their only source of income. Consequently, they are facing problems in their daily lives due to the lack of finances for everyday purchases.

Despite the disruption at Commerzbank, the bank of the year 2023, it's essential to note that life in Germany continues to thrive. Despite the technical error causing inconvenience, German banks, including Commerzbank, are legally obligated to reimburse affected clients promptly and restore their payment accounts to their original state. Understanding these laws can provide comfort and assurance to individuals dealing with such situations.
