Commencement of the second phase of the migration discussion session - Reduction in anticipations without cost
Starting from Tuesday afternoon, discussions about immigration policy have been ongoing at the Federal Ministry of Interior. The initial session on Tuesday concluded without any resolution. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) had enforced border checks at all German land territories on Monday and promised increased rejections compared to previous instances. This was the condition the Union stipulated for attending the second meeting.
Frei, from the Union, highlighted that there had been phone conversations with Faeser on both Monday and Tuesday. During these conversations, Faeser "made it clear what was necessary for us to engage in such a discussion," stated Frei.
However, sifting through statements from the coalition, Frei voiced some reservations. He specifically pointed to comments from Green Party faction leader Katharina Dröge, who expressed doubts regarding the increased rejections.
SPD faction vice Dirk Wiese mentioned before the meeting, "I am glad that the meeting is taking place today and that the ultimatums have been dropped." He emphasized, however, that the primary focus would be on discussing immigration policies that adhere to European laws.
Frei expressed his expectations for a productive discussion, given the assurances made by Minister Faeser during their phone conversations. However, his expectations were slightly dampened due to the Green Party's reservations about the proposed increase in rejections.
