Commencement of EU negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova scheduled for Tuesday
Starting June, the European Commission acknowledged that Ukraine and Moldova had met all requirements to initiate membership negotiations. This includes their efforts against corruption and their respect for minority rights, as confirmed. The leaders had made these conditions necessary for the talks back in December.
Following Russia's invasion in Ukraine in February 2022, both countries submitted their EU membership applications. However, quick acceptance isn't on the horizon. For Ukraine, resolving conflicts with Russia first is crucial.
Aspiring members need to prove their ability to adhere to Community law and all EU agreements, commonly known as the Acquis. Typically, this time-consuming process can last years, if not decades. In Ukraine's case, the EU encounters significant hurdles, particularly in defense and agricultural aid sectors.
