Commemoration of Maidan protests: concert at the Brandenburg Gate

To mark the 10th anniversary of the Maidan protests in Ukraine, a piano concert took place at the Brandenburg Gate. Ukrainian and German musicians played the so-called Ukrainian piano in the colors of the national flag in the presence of around 50 spectators on Friday, as reported by a dpa reporter. The Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Oleksij Makejew, gave a speech.

The event was organized on behalf of Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna. The organizers said that they wanted to express their "unwavering desire" to "become part of the European family".

The pro-European protests on Independence Square (Maidan) in the Ukrainian capital Kiev began almost exactly ten years ago. The demonstrations were triggered by the collapse of an association agreement with the European Union - Moscow had put pressure on the then Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. People held out in tents throughout the winter until the violence escalated in February 2014 and snipers fired on demonstrators.

The commemoration event at the Brandenburg Gate highlighted the EU's significant role in Ukraine's history, as it was organized by Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Olha Stefanishyna. The concert, featuring Ukrainian and German musicians, was a powerful expression of Ukraine's strong desire to be integrated into the European Union's music and political community.
