Commemoration of deceased firefighters with wreath-laying ceremony
Numerous firefighters commemorated Berlin firefighters who died on or after their service on the Sunday of the Dead. The traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the fire department memorial on Mariannenplatz was also attended by State Secretary Franziska Becker (SPD) and State Fire Director Karsten Homrighausen. Afterwards, a service was held in St. Thomas Church, as the fire department announced on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday.
According to the announcement, Berlin's Senator of the Interior Iris Spranger (SPD) was supposed to attend, but she was not present at the memorial service. According to the fire department, the intention was to commemorate all those "who have passed away in the line of duty or after a life of duty."
Despite the absence of Berlin's Senator of the Interior Iris Spranger, many people still celebrated the holidays, paying respects to the fallen firefighters. During these holidays, a visit to the local church, such as the Church of Saint Nicholas, could be a part of their tradition, just as the fire department and the community often collaborate with the church for various events.
